Ok! I saw Sarkar Raj this weekend. I would not like this to be called a review or something but definitely it is a “how I felt about the movie” post!!
I have to make clear two things. First, I am die-hard Aishwarya Rai follower!! She is the best!!
Two, Ram Gopal Varma has not been one of my favourite directors.
And about the movie now… It was a good, intriguing movie with some intense political drama set at the heart of the script. I have to say my expectations were huge from the movie as post Jodhaa Akbar, I was waiting for Aishwarya’s next movie where I had heard she plays a powerful character.
Now it would be unjust if I just go on and on about her because I enjoyed the movie not only because of her but the movie in itself was a real good one. I have to say the pre-interval part of the movie was not spectacular, just a turn of events , yes it lays the foundation of what lies ahead of the interval. Towards the interval and after that, it shows why those events happened. I thought RGV takes the movie to a really different level post interval. I mean I just sat mouth agape at what was going on!! Seriously! It was mind boggling. He makes the audience think into the movie and its happenings.
Look at Race it had a lot of twists and turns in the plot but they were not shocking or “whaa–t” kinda ones. The one twist in this movie was really a great thing in the script. It had goosebumps all over me! Amitabh Bachchan plays it down for most part of the movie and Abhishek takes over in the first part. But towards the climax and the end Amitabh proves it onces again that he is The master and takes ovaer the film like a dynamite. Support in the form of subtle roles of Tanisha and Supriya Pathak. And you have the usual “Sarkar stamps” like the sepia tones, the unnatural camera angles and close up shots. A visual treat too.
Three things that had me sit up and notice: The amazing way the second part and climax has been dealt with. You couldn’t have asked for a better one. Hell I didn’t expect that climax in the first place!
Secondly, some scenes were picturised very well. I specially like the sequence where Abhishek rams a jeep into a transformer setting power lines on fire on a street, his gang walking through smoke to rescue someone who has been kidnapped. That was a well shot scene.
Lastly, Aishwarya. She primarily is a spectator to the events taking place in the movie, sticking to her character in the movie till the end. But again, her role along with Amitabh’s comes up full force towards the end. She makes her mark in two scenes, both scenes where she cries on someone’s loss. She really leaves a mark in those scenes!
The new find, who reminds you too much of Raj Thackeray, and others make the movie a full mind treat. If you have a taste for some intense political drama, plots, ulterior motives, danger, some great acting by all three of the primary cast and some good visuals Sarkar Raj does it for you! A must watch for some amazing effect!
